mLM Milestone 6: Reverse engineering Reservoir Regulation with Climatology
Milestone ID: 139

  • At the moment, mLM has 12 optimisation parameters (one for each month) for seasonal variability of three pool levels that form the Rule Curve - Top of Inactive (ToI), Top of Conservation (ToC) and Top of Flood Control (ToFC).
  • There are two foreseeable issues with this -
    • There will be 12 parameters for each lake/ reservoir. If we have a cascading system of reservoirs of say six reservoirs, then we already have 72+ parameters for mLM alone!
    • Usually its the case that the three rule curves/ pool levels have different seasonality and are not parallel as in current case.
  • Solutions -
    • Since reservoir is controlled based on the inflow to the lake, we aim to establish a relationship between the Rule Curve or the fluctuation of pool levels with lake inflow. A linear relationship would mean two parameters instead of 12.
    • This relationship should different for the three pool levels i.e. 2 x 3 parameters. Thus once regionalized with transfer functions it would lead to only 6 parameters for all reservoirs of the cascade model!
