Interpolation cleanup

We have a Multitalent of Interpolation functions linear, interpolate, interpolateIndex and interpolateInvalid. As linear and interpolate simply wrap interpolateIndex I am asking myself if we could either replace one or more of these be sensible default values and/or male the distiction clearer, for example by other function names. What dobyou think @luenensc?
